vbPortal is a powerful and customisable cms portal package for vBulletin. It has been written in PHP and uses MySQL for a fast backend database engine. The goal is to give you options and features to separate your forum from the rest and make it broad enough to attract more visitors and users. vbPortal allows you to store, format, reproduce and manage content. Not only can the user join a sub-usergroup and have a whole sub-set of forums they can now have a whole set of portal modules assigned to that usergroup alone and a completely diverse style set for each one. vbportal is really a content management system that allows you to set each group to have their own homepage, it allows members to submit reviews, web links, upload files that other users can download, submit classified ads, and articles and allows you or co-admins with the right permissions to manage this from the portalcp. Some duties can also be performed inline by module moderators. You can add frequently asked questions in addition to your forums faqs, encyclopedia's, users can keep journals and it has an extensive bug reporter (similar in nature to vbulletin's). There's also extensive statistics throughout, such as top posters, top forums, top threads, as well as detailed statistics from the classifieds, reviews, link, downloads, content modules and of course your forums. You can pull news from multiple forums and display a preview of the first post in a centre (or side) block in any module you choose, the news block also displays the first image attachment as a clickable thumbnail. vbPortal also comes with a very extensive Latest Threads module and blocks. From the latest threads module, you can view every single thread from all forums you have permission to see. In addition you can specify forums to exclude from the latest threads or choose not to use the forum permissions at all and simply show everyone a link to everything (as a teaser) or just those forums you specify. All of the modules allow you to set how far back to go when listing threads/articles, such as the last day, week, month, etc - just like you do with your forums. Every module in vbportal (there are 23 core modules at present) allows you to display different side and centre blocks. You can have the latest thread and news sideblock in the left column of one module, in the right column of another, in fact you can configure each module to display any of the existing 70+ blocks to-date. It also supports a sidebar in your forums. You can't select all 70+ blocks for your forums sidebar though, just those that are considered to be side blocks. As well as displaying side blocks in your modules, you can also display centre blocks. In addition, you can configure how many items are displayed in each block. If you want to show your last 10 reviews but only the last 6 web links, you simply change the display limit in the blocks properties. If you want to display 5 items from a newsfeed in the left column of a module but only 4 in the centre column of another module you can do this. All of the modules use options and permissions to determine who can do what in each module. You can for example allow registered users to start their own articles and reply to their own articles (links, reviews, classifieds, etc), but not reply to other members articles - much like you do with your forums. You can add unlimited categories and child categories, with no limit to the depth and you can also configure each module to use a different theme. vbportal doesn't require you to hack any of your vbulletin files and installs simply by running the installation script in your browser. You can add administrators to help you manage your content from the portalcp and add moderators to help you with each of the modules. There is extensive logging that allows you to track who clicked on your banners, what page they clicked from, who has clicked on your Web Links and who downloaded the files that members have uploaded to the Downloads module. There is also an administrator log to track what each of your administrators have been doing in the portalcp. You can pull newsfeeds from external sources (RDF/RSS feeds) and from your own site, including your own News forums, reviews, classifieds, links, content and downloads articles. You can add messages that are displayed to users of specific groups. vbportal also supports vbulletin's secondary user groups. You can also build a sidemenu (displayed as a block) that allows visitors to open links in a new browser window or the same one, and set which usergroups see which menu links. You can add banners that display in your header, footer, forum sidebar, portal side columns or centre column. The banners rotate and you can track the number of views, hits and allow your banner clients to login and view their banner statistics or have the statistics mailed to them. You can have unlimited banner clients and banner/ads per client. You can turn banners off per usergroup, in the header, footer or site wide. Any module can be hidden from usergroups that don't have permission to see it which in turn automagically builds the side menu dropdown that visitors can use to navigate your site. The new module layout allows you to have greater control of which modules each usergroup can see, greater control of which blocks can be seen in each module and also allows you to manage the layout of the blocks in each module. Almost every vbportal module has an equivalent side and centre block, all of the modules have at least one of them. The centre blocks normally display much more detailed information than the sideblocks. There's over 70 blocks currently packaged with vbportal. This include blocks to display the latest Journal entries, the latest Bugs from the tracker module, the latest news, the latest threads from your forums, the latest poll, the latest reviews, links, downloads, classified and content articles, there's a top stories block, the top downloads, top reviews, top links, top classified ads, there is a ministats block, banner blocks, system message blocks, blocks that display RDF (RSS) feeds from external sites or your own site, login side and centre blocks. Latest encyclopedia's latest faqs, ephemerides and you can very easily add your own HTML type blocks or blocks with php code. The output from the HTML/php blocks is displayed inline with the rest of the blocks in the module. You can also preview a block from the portalcp to see what it looks like and confirm its working before activating it in any of your modules. You can set the weight of each block in each module. You can also decide not to have any side columns in a module, or a combination of left columns or right columns. All in, you can configure every module to look the way you want it to and display only the content you want. If a user does not have permission to see a module, they do not see any equivalent side or centre blocks that pull from the module's content. If they do not have permission to view your web links module for example, they will not see any of the equivalent web link blocks either. vbportal has its own content management called portalcp. Here you would configure the many options for vbportal, add categories to your modules, set usergroup options and permissions and also options and permissions for each of the modules. If you are familiar with vbulletin's forum permissions and options you will have no difficulty mastering vbportal's extensive cms. Compared to versions of vbportal for vbulletin 2.x, version 3.x is faster, uses far less queries by leveraging vbulletin's power (0-5 per module in comparison to dozens in version 2.x and 0 to 5 per block, depending on which blocks), but as you can activate each block individually per module, you no longer need to cram every single block on every page, so you can spread your content around better. You no longer need to activate a block just because you want it on your homepage but not really on any other modules, you simply activate it on the homepage, set the column and weight, then it only appears on the homepage and not any of the other modules. You can of course, set it up in any of the other modules, independently, including which column and at what weight in the column. 99.9% of the output from vbportal's module's and blocks are in templates, so you can edit the look and feel of your site without needing to hack vbportal files. You can simply edit the P_ templates using vbulletin admincp, style manager. vbPortal also doesn't make many changes to your existing templates, just 5 to add a pathing issue so as your images display correctly and the javascript files load in both the portal and forum pages (also 3rd party apps such as photopost and reviewpost). vbportal only makes two very small changes to your vbulletin tables. The changes are very simple. No extra fields are added. Just an extra index to the user and post table so as to improve vbportal queries. The new Legacy Style for vbPortal available in the premium members forums allows you to quickly and easily use almost any existing vbulletin skin, many of the popular 3rd party themes have already been converted and are demo'd at vbportal.org. Change themes using the stylechooser in the page footer. |
